Officials said a man used a 9mm pistol to shoot at a school bus in Buena Park in an attempt to murder the school bus driver.
Homicide detectives identified the suspect as Cedric Baxter, 60, of Compton on September 9. Baxter tried to murder the school bus driver. He was his separated wife, Sergeant Buena Park police spokesman. Chad Weaver told The Epoch Times.
Baxter’s wife has a positive domestic violence restraining order against him.
“Baxter has a long criminal history. Baxter’s parole has been revoked due to the recent domestic violence incident. He was on parole at the time of the incident,” Weaver said.
Baxter drove a gray Chevrolet Tahoe when he shot a school bus in motion with a child inside.
The shooting occurred in the Orange Thorpe Avenue and Western Avenue areas, which are close to many schools.
A police officer who witnessed the shooting tried to prevent Baxter from escaping, and then pursued him.
Weaver said Baxter ran across the city streets, drove through the Buena Park school district parking lot, returned to the city streets, and tried again to return to the school district parking lot.
When Baxter tried to drive back to the parking lot, he was blocked by the entrance gate, and someone closed the door and locked it.
Baxter hit the gate and collided with a car in the parking lot. Then he got out of the car.
A police officer involved in the shooting occurred, and Baxter was pronounced dead at the scene. His gun was found.
There were no reports of casualties in the incident.
Weaver said that the case is an isolated incident and three independent investigations have been conducted on the case.
Officials said that less than a week later, a student from Buena Park High School (BPHS) arrived at the school with a gun and was arrested on September 8.
School staff notified the School Resource Officer (SRO) of the Buena Park Police that a student had a gun with him.
Buena Park police said in a statement: “The student tried to escape and was detained in safe custody after a short fight.”
A loaded 9mm pistol is located in the student’s trouser pocket.
The student was arrested and taken to the juvenile hall. The identity of the suspect has not been made public.
