Man wearing ski mask arrested with gun, ammo on South Side, police say

Madison police said a man wearing a ski mask was arrested with a loaded gun during a traffic stop where his mother tried to give him a fake name for law enforcement.

Officer Ryan Kimberley said in a statement that an officer arrested Trayvon Kelly, 23, when he was in a vehicle that was pulled over on Thursday afternoon for an equipment violation on the 2400 block of Rimrock Road. When the vehicle was pulled over, the officer saw Kelly wearing a ski mask.

After a police dog smelled a banned substance in the vehicle, the officer asked Kelly and the driver to sit on the curb and Kelly got up loudly and stood up during a search of the vehicle, Kimberley said. The officer handcuffed Kelly and placed him in the back of a squad car, and a loaded gun, gunpowder and ski mask were later found in the vehicle.

During a traffic stop, Kelly’s mother, 39-year-old Keshaunta Kelly, came to the scene and gave a fake name for her son, Kimberley said.

Kimberley said Kelly was taken to the Dane County Jail on possible charges of burglary and burglary on a concealed weapon, handicap and two monona warrants. Kelly’s mother was cited for obstruction and was released at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was warned several times and let off.
