Manchester United offers free agent Christian Eriksen a deal

Manchester United have offered to sign Christian Ericsson. athletic understands.

The 30-year-old Ericsson is available to sign on a free transfer as his Brentford contract expires on 30 June.

The Denmark international signed a short-term deal with Thomas Frank’s side in January and made an immediate impact, helping the club finish an impressive 13th place.

Brentford won seven of Ericsson’s 11 matches, meaning they secured safety a few weeks before the season ended.

With Barcelona player Frankie de Jong considered the club’s top midfield priority, United have been made aware of the Spanish side’s financial difficulties.

But it is understood there is some way to steer talks between United and Barcelona and the Premier League club has other options, of which Ericsson is one.

Brentford is very interested in extending the midfielder’s stay in west London, but last month Ericsson said he was considering a number of options from several different clubs.

Speaking to Wyplay, Ericsson said: “I have different offers and options that we are considering, and then we make a decision.

“I would love to play Champions League football again. I know how fun it is, but it’s not necessary for me.”

Manchester United could only manage to finish sixth last season under Ralph Rangnick, but could offer Ericsson a return to Europe in the UEFA Europa League.

Former Ajax manager Erik ten Haag has taken over the reins at Old Trafford after joining the club on an initial three-year deal.

Ericsson trained with Ajax’s reserve before joining Brentford in January to get back up to speed following a cardiac arrest delayed at Euro 2020. He played for Ajax between 2010 and 2013.

United declined to comment.
