Police remained on the spot on Friday morning. The Ministry of Labor and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office are also investigating.

‘Thought it was an earthquake’

Flames and black smoke were seen emanating from the commercial building on Meriwale Road at around 1:30 pm on Thursday.

Ottawa Fire Services officials said 911 callers heard an explosion before seeing flames 15 meters through the roof of a structure.

Count Tim Tierney said he was visiting the City of Ottawa facility meters away from the building when the fire broke out.

“I actually thought it was an earthquake at first. The ground was shaking and then all of a sudden, a few seconds later, I suddenly heard a bang,” Tierney told Ottawa Now of Newstalk 580 CFRA with Christy Cameron.

Three people in the building at the time were taken to the hospital. Paramedics said that two reached the hospital in critical condition, while the condition of the other patient is stable.

A firefighter was also treated with minor injuries.

Workers brought heavy equipment to douse the fire on Thursday evening. Paul Hutt, the acting chief of the Ottawa Fire Service, said residents in the area were in no danger.

“As we quell the fire, there is a flow of water that is occurring as a result of we pouring water into the fire. I want to reassure residents that there are no worries – we have our HAZMAT team,” Hutt. said on Thursday.

According to the company’s website, Eastway Tanks, Pumps & Meter Ltd. is a custom manufacturer of tank trucks for both the North American and international markets.

‘I hear a loud bang’

Witnesses said a loud “explosion” was heard before the fire started.

Jesse Hedland, who works near Francis Gas Bar, said, “I was serving a customer, just finishing with him and I heard a loud bang. Next thing I know there’s a huge plume of black smoke.” It’s a cloud.”

“It’s coming ‘or high’ and I finally see some flames lurking in the back of the truck. Probably the biggest thing I’ve seen in my nine years working here.”

Amanda Fung is the owner of the Country Place Chinese restaurant near the scene of the fire.

“I’m eating my lunch and I smell smoke. When I went outside to look out the window I saw huge flames.”
