‘March for Our Lives’ rallies against gun violence in hundreds of US cities

Thousands of people rallied in the nation’s capital and other US cities on Saturday to demand that gun control be strengthened.

“It’s done,” Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser told a crowd for the Second March for Our Lives rally in his city. “I speak as a mayor, as a mother, and I speak for the millions of Americans and the mayors of America who are demanding that Congress do its job. And its job is to protect us, protect our children from gun violence.” to be saved from.”

The first March For Our Lives rally was held in 2018 in Parkland, Florida, after a school shooting that killed 17 people. This week’s events were held until March for Our Lives co-founder and Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg, following the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, last month.

In the Texas shooting, 19 children and two teachers were killed by an 18-year-old armed with an AR-15. Police waited for more than an hour before entering the classroom to confront the shooter, as they feared for their own safety. An Uvalde pediatrician told Congress this week that the bullets ripped apart the bodies of children and left some of them beheaded.

Hogg told a DC crowd, “If our government can’t do anything to stop the 19 kids being shot and killed in their own school, and it’s time to change who’s in government, it’s time.”

The Uvalde shooter legally obtained his AR-15 the day after he turned 18. Earlier this week, the House of Representatives approved a package of gun control bills that would increase the age requirement for most rifle sales from 18 to 21.

According to the March for Our Lives website, rallies are scheduled in more than 400 US cities in nearly all 50 states.
