Mass shooting at Highland Park: Six people confirmed dead and 31 injured

Many of those participating in the 4th of July celebration reportedly sustained gunshot wounds as the parade moved down Central Avenue and 2nd Avenue in Highland Park around 10:30 a.m. local time.

Of those shot, five adults were pronounced dead on the spot and a sixth person died at a local hospital, but it was not known whether he was an adult or a child.

At least four of the injured who were taken to hospitals were children, but most of the patients were treated and released, according to doctors who were in charge of emergencies.

The survivors ranged in age from 8 to 85 years.

There are reports that more than one armed suspect opened fire, but police have not confirmed this information.

Citizens are being asked if they have videos recorded during the parade to be shared with authorities to help investigators put the case together and eventually find the perpetrator of the massacre.

A family reunion center with survivors of the shooting has been established at Highland Park Police Station at 1677 Old Deerfield Road.
