Matthew McConaughey Will Not Run for Governor of Texas in 2022 | AP News

AUSTIN, TX (AP) – Actor Matthew McConaughey is not running for Governor of Texas after months of public flirting with the idea of being the ultimate celebrity candidate.

Academy Award winner said in video posted on Sunday night this political leadership was not the route he took “at this moment.” McConaughey, 52, said he will focus instead on supporting businesses and foundations that create pathways for others to succeed.

The Texas Governor’s Race is already gearing up to be one of the nation’s high-profile competitions in 2022. Republican Governor Greg Abbott is running for a third term, and Democrat Beto O’Rourke, who turned down failed Senate and President bids, announced the month he was in the race.

The Stunned and Confused and Dallas Buyers Club star never said which party, if any, he was going to, but admitted he was considering running for governor in his home state. McConaughey also avoided going into details of politics and positions on controversial issues in Texas.

“Politicians? The good ones can help us get where we need to, yes, ”McConaughey said in a video posted on Twitter. “But let’s be clear that they can’t do anything for us if we don’t do it ourselves.”

In California, former Olympic champion Caitlyn Jenner ran for governor this year in a failed GOP effort to withdraw Democrat Gavin Newsom’s candidacy, but has gained little traction.
