Matthew Stafford returns to shock protocol

Thousand Oaks, Calif. ( Associated Press) – Quarterback Matthew Stafford will miss his second game with the Los Angeles Rams in three weeks as he re-entered the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Sean McVay confirmed Stafford will be out for Sunday’s trip to the Rams (3-7) against the Kansas City Chiefs, but the coach said Wednesday that doesn’t mean the Super Bowl champion quarterback is out with an injury.

Instead, McVay referred to the injury as a “neck problem”.

Ram continues to pile up injuries. Stafford is the latest blow, as is defensive tackle A’Shaun Robinson, who will be out for the season after suffering a torn meniscus in his knee.

Stafford left the game in Sunday’s loss to New Orleans because his feet went numb after taking a hit. McVay said that the QB has been examined by doctors, but they have not determined whether he is concussed, but he nevertheless returned, per protocol, the way he came out of the game.

“We’re going through the entire list,” McVay said. “There are many layers, but we want to make sure we are doing everything in our power and let the experts give their opinion, see the echo and have the right information to move forward.”

Stafford had missed a loss to Arizona two weeks earlier after entering the protocol for the first time. Ram has not confirmed if he was hurt at that time.

The coach said Stafford and the Rams have not decided whether the quarterback could go on the disabled list or even sit out the season. Los Angeles has six games left after Sunday and a tough road ahead in the post-season.

They don’t even know who their starting quarterback will be against the Chiefs.

Third choice Bryce Perkins would do most of the plays in practice as backup John Wolford sustained a neck injury that forced him to miss the game against New Orleans.

Stafford has been one of the most resilient quarterbacks over the past 12 years, missing just eight games in that span — all due to a back injury sustained while playing for Detroit in 2019.
