McCutchan hits first of MLB season as NL DH, with No. 21 patch

Andrew McCutchen of the Milwaukee Brewers gets his first hit of the 2022 Major League Baseball season. As a National League designated hitter. Also wearing the Roberto Clemente number 21 patch.

New season, new look in big companies on opening day.

McCutchen double sliced in a right-field corner in the second inning, near Dead Ivy on the brick wall at Wrigley Field below, as the Brewers played the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. In the fourth innings, McCutchen singled out and scored his first run of the year.

The Cubs’ Nico Horner hit his first home run of the season, connecting current NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burns for a two-run drive in fifth.

Earlier games at Yankee Stadium and Minnesota postponed due to bad weather made the Brewers-Cubs matchup the first match of the year. It was a raw 44 degrees when Chicago right-hander Kyle Hendrix threw the first pitch, which was tossed by Colton Wong for a popout blowing into the air.

The MLB season was originally scheduled to begin on March 31, but was pushed back due to a 99-day lockdown as owners and players worked out a new labor contract.

As part of the deal, the National League has now adopted the designated hitter permanently—the American League began using it in 1973, and the NL made it pandemic-shortened before going back to hitting pitchers last year. Added for the 2020 season.

McCutchen, the 2013 NL MVP with Pittsburgh, signed with Milwaukee in the off-season as a free agent. He topped the second innings with his double. After two innings, he singled out and was eventually scored on the groundout by Lorenzo Cain.

McCutcheon, 35, is among several Roberto Clemente Award winners who will wear the number 21 — the number worn by the late Pirates Hall of Famer — on the back of his hat and helmet for the rest of his career.

MLB said it was a “special tribute to his enduring legacy.” The announcement was timed for the 50th anniversary of the year in which Pittsburgh great Clemente of Puerto Rico died in a plane crash during a humanitarian relief effort.
