‘Melrose Place’ actor loses bid to commute accident sentence

Trenton, NJ ( Associated Press) — An actress who appeared in the 1990 prime-time soap opera “Melrose Place” has lost a bid to reduce her sentence in a fatal 2010 auto accident.

A New Jersey appeals court rejected Amy Loken’s arguments in a ruling published Tuesday.

Loken was convicted of vehicular manslaughter and other counts for the crash that killed 60-year-old Helen Seaman and seriously injured Seaman’s husband, Fred. While he was not charged with drunk driving, a state expert testified that Loken’s blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit and that he could reach 35-mph (56-kph). It was driving around 53 mph (85 kph) in the area. The time of the accident in Montgomery Township, near Princeton.

Loken has been sentenced to four separate sentences after appeals courts ruled that the first two sentences were too lenient and a third did not properly follow the guidelines set out in the earlier ruling.

She had already spent more than two years in prison and was released by 2020, when State Superior Court Judge Angela Borkowski reprimanded her for eight years.

In Tuesday’s ruling, the appeals court held that Borkowski correctly gave more weight to aggravating factors — such as the seriousness of the crime and Loken’s decision to drive clearly — such as Loken’s lack of prior criminal record and efforts. Rehabilitation than mitigating factors.

The court also rejected Loken’s argument that Borkowski should have recused himself because the law firm representing Loken had once represented Borkowski’s niece in a municipal traffic case.

According to the state Department of Corrections website, Loken received credit for the time he was sentenced in 2020 and is eligible for parole in December 2024.

A message was left with the attorney representing Loken on Tuesday.
