Mental health budget is spent on fighting addictions

The head of the Querétaro State Mental Health Center, Marbella Espino Cortes, pointed out that less than 20% of the federal mental health budget is allocated to address this type of problem in the country.

He explained that at the federal level, only 2% of the budget provided to the health sector is directed to mental health issues, and partially, 85% is earmarked for tackling addictions and the maintenance of psychiatric hospitals. Is.

He said that despite the fact that the World Health Organization (WHO) has mentioned that at least 5% of the total budget should be devoted to mental health issues, this is not done because many health sectors do not prioritize mental health. Do not see as to participate in.

He stressed that although mental health is needed, there is not much budget to focus on it, apart from the fact that it is not yet considered as a priority health issue by various sectors.

“The budget allocated to mental health is very low, just 2% of the budget at the federal level is given to this item when the World Health Organization (WHO) requests that it be at least 5%, and moreover, out of 2%, 85% go to psychiatric hospitals for maintenance and care issues and addiction prevention, they leave us very little to actually attend to mental health problems”, he concluded.

In this regard, in the state of Querétaro, during 2022, he remarked that the number of care for patients with mental health problems has increased, with an increase of 7.4% in the number of care compared to 2021.

“The number of services increased during 2022, we registered 32,000 people, in 2021 we had 30,000 records,” he remarked.

He explained that this increase does not mean that the number of people with any disease has increased, but that more people have started or resumed treatment than with the pandemic or any other issue. , they were stopped, because in the pre-epidemic years there was up to an annual average of 35 thousand people served.

“This increase does not mean that there are more sick people, but rather that more people were treated or reassigned to care than they previously requested that, for a variety of reasons, including the pandemic, they attended. Shut down,” he explained.
