Selma, Calif.—For many new and painful experiences, one was the experience hundreds of students forced to stay at the Eric White school until police deemed it safe. During the day on Wednesday, many of them received mental health counseling.
The primary school reported that a district mental health team visited students, parents and staff, and that there were 6 teams visiting classrooms at the same time.
Students were able to share their feelings. And two therapy dogs were on hand to interact with the minors. The same team is expected to be at the elementary school on Thursday.
Preventive shutdown due to shooting
Shortly before noon, several law enforcement agencies arrived in the vicinity of Eric White Elementary School. What came next was the anguish and fear of parents at not being able to reach their children, and the surprise of the students at the sight of tactical agents.
A statement from the school indicated that they believe these actions may have disturbed children, so they offer mental health care for Eric White students for as long as it is necessary.
If Eric White’s parent would like to be connected with mental health services, please let Eric White’s office staff know or call 559-898-6500. 41113.
School officials also pointed out that “the number one priority is keeping our students and families safe.” And so despite the closure some students could not be released.
“Any time law enforcement orders a school closure, we will comply,” said a statement from the Eric White School of Selma.
School officials say that when the lockdown was lifted, police asked students to leave in small groups of 20 or fewer, and it took a long time to release all the students.
“It took a long time since the school had over 600 students,” he says. He adds: “We know parents were disappointed, but followed law enforcement instructions to maximize student safety.”
The school will remain open for the rest of the week with mental health support available for students and staff.
The suspect was arrested, however, as fear and uncertainty edged the Selma neighborhood for hours.
