Mexico imports 9.2 billion dollars of goods made ‘under slavery’

Mexico City.- Mexico not only has a large share of labor in the countries of the Americas, but also buys 9.2 billion dollars made by “modern slavery” in 2012.

The Global Slavery Index 2023, compiled by the human rights group Walk Free, details that the country’s most important imports are electronics from China, such as laptops, computers and mobile phones, which are worth 5.5 billion dollars.

It also imports 1.5 billion dollars worth of clothes from the Asian country.

According to the list, Mexico is the 13th country in the Americas with the highest wages.

The prevalence of so-called modern slavery is 6.6 percent in the country, per thousand inhabitants, above countries such as the United States of America, Canada, Chile, Uruguay, and Costa Rica.

In total, it indicates, 850,000 people in this country are on the site.

This year, Mexico barely published an agreement to restrict the importation of products with high labor costs.

“The United States is the country that has opposed most slavery measures in the Americas, followed by Canada, Argentina and Uruguay. While Cuba, Suriname and Venezuela have taken the least action.

“Of the five G20 countries in the region (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, US), Brazil, Canada, and the United States have managed to supply our slave labor in bonds,” the report says.

The document states that the G20 countries import more than half of all people living in conditions of exploitation (50 million), more than 468 billion dollars of goods produced with heavy labor.

This is an increase of 61 billion dollars, if it is considered that in 2018 it was 354 billion.

The report adds that more needs to be done to strengthen laws and societies to be accountable and tackle the gender inequality that drives the modern slavery of women and girls.

According to the Index, climate change has increased the risks of exploitation by forcing people to migrate in an involuntary manner.

So that 50 million people globally live in modern slavery, this is compared to more than 100 million five years ago.

The Global Slavery Index shows that the 10 countries with the highest prevalence of modern slavery are North Korea, Eritrea, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Tajikistan, United Arab Emirates, Russia, Afghanistan and Kuwait.
