Mexico transfers migrant camps; Haitians appear on the border

MEXICO CITY ( Associated Press) – Mexican authorities said Tuesday they have moved a migrant camp that has grown in a park in the border city of Reynosa, Central American and Haiti, to a shelter in the city of about 2,000 people, Moved across the border from McAllen. , Texas.

The camp of migrants, mainly from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Haiti, emerged after the American authorities. Citing the pandemic, a health rule has been invoked that denies migrants the opportunity to seek asylum.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said the migrants were moved to the shelter near midnight on Monday, which it said would have improved sanitation and food services.

But on Monday, people in another border town, Nuevo Laredo, said hundreds of migrants, mainly Haitians, had flown into the city, which is across the border from Laredo, Texas.

The rush apparently started when the US began processing some asylum seekers there.

The Catholic bishop of Nuevo Laredo said on Monday that migrant shelters there are already overcrowded, with some migrants sleeping in tents outside.

Bishop Enrique Sánchez Martínez said migrants began streaming in Nuevo Laredo in late April, although the city is not generally popular among migrants, as it is dominated by violent northeastern drug cartels.

“It’s new to us because it’s the last place in our city because of our border conditions, which are sometimes unfavorable for migrants,” Bishop said. “But since they opened the door to asylum requests in the United States, a lot of them came in large groups.”

Casa Nazareth shelter director Marvin Ajic said that around April 16, Mexican authorities informed shelters that the United States would resume asylum claims for humanitarian reasons.

On May 23, the US began allowing more people, especially Central American adults, to lift Title 42 – a pandemic-era health rule designed to allow migrants the opportunity to seek asylum in the US. “The (Mexican) immigration officials organized things with the shelters, and the plan was to send people who had been waiting a long time, without any checks, basically anyone,” Ajic.

This apparently attracted the attention of other immigrants, including Haitians.

Ajik warned the migrants not to come to the border, given the risks. Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said on Monday that so far this year it has retrieved the bodies of 19 migrants from the Rio Grande, also known as the Rio Bravo.
