Miami-Dade warns of fraud when applying for rental assistance

Miami.- Michael Liu, director of the County Department of Public Housing and Development miami dade (PHCD), warned of fraudulent activity related to the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP).

The PHCD announced via a statement that it has received several complaints alleging that some residents are being charged a $500 fee to complete and expedite applications.

The Department of Housing advised that these individuals are not county employees.

“The ERAP application is completely free and the county never asks participants to pay for the application,” Liu said.

“Unfortunately, some people in our community are taking advantage of residents in need of emergency rental assistance by promising fast approval in exchange for money. This is a complete lie and no one has the ability to facilitate or expedite the ERAP application approval,” the official warned.

Liu recommended that anyone interested in applying for ERAP assistance visit the website at https://miamidade.gov/housing or call the ERAP hotline at 305-723-1815 or 311.

“We also ask that you contact Miami-Dade County immediately if anyone asks you for money to complete your application for the ERAP program.”

The ERAP program is part of the Promoted Homes plan by Mayor Daniela Levin Cava to assist residents whose income does not exceed 140% of the median income for the area and who have hardships or cannot afford the rent increase for their homes. Can.

ERAP can help them pay the difference between their current rent and the new rent over a period of three months.

As a requirement to receive assistance, it is established that they cannot afford the rent increase and the family income must be 140% of the area income, ie: less than $95,620 per month for a single person, a The couple must earn $109,200, the family nucleus of three members up to $122,920 and the family of four up to $136,500 per month.
