Former Donald Trump’s personal attorney and aide Michael Cohen on Sunday criticized the former president’s unsubstantiated claim that the election was somehow rigged against him as “the greatest fraud in US history.”
Cohen insisted in an interview with Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet the Press that Trump continues to scream fraud to raise money to fill his pockets.
Trump “has made it very clear that he is deceiving the American people, these supporters, these people who are just sending him record amounts of money,” Cohen said, referring to Trump’s “big lie”.
“This should be a documentary and called The Greatest Mistake in US History,” he mocked.
Because portraying himself as a victim is so lucrative for Trump, Cohen does not believe he will run for re-election. Cohen believes that if he loses again, the profit complaints will lose their force.
“If he loses and he loses in 2024, what happens to the Big Lie? Big lies disappear, ”Cohen said.
“Now he cannot be like the boy who shouted ‘Wolf’: ‘Oh, they stole it from me in 2020 – now they stole it from me in 2024,” he said. “Now it’s out the door, and here’s his money. Here’s a big draw. “
But Trump will pretend to be playing with the idea of running straight until “the very last second,” Cohen predicted.
“He makes a statement:“ I think about it. I think about this.’ This is just to keep the network growing, ”Cohen said. “It’s really amazing that people don’t see exactly what this guy is doing.”
Trump is already starting to act as a candidate, but said he could not yet reveal his plans due to “ridiculous” campaign finance laws. The law requires accounting for incoming contributions and expenses.
Cohen, who said he continues to work with investigators, is convinced that prosecutors can “indict Trump tomorrow” if they want to “and succeed.”
He believes that the prosecutor’s office will go after Trump and his children Eric, Ivanka and Donald Jr.
Todd asked Cohen if he was involved in any of the crimes he believed were committed.
“I can assure you that Donald Trump is guilty of his crimes,” he replied. “Have I been involved in most of the inflation and deflation of his assets? The answer to that is yes. “
Cohen served a three-year sentence last week – much of it held at home due to the pandemic – for campaign finance violations and lying to Congress, among other crimes.
