OTTAWA—Michael Spavor is thanking the Canadian people and the world for their support, a week after his 1,020-day ordeal in a Chinese prison ended.
Spavor was released along with Michael Kovrig a week ago after the United States prosecuted Chinese high-tech executive Meng Wanzhou.
Two men were arrested and convicted of spying by China in what is widely seen as retaliation for the RCMP’s December 1, 2018, arrest of Meng at Vancouver airport on a US extradition warrant .
The saga ended when the US entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with Meng that resulted in the charges against him being dropped and the extradition request withdrawn in a Vancouver court.
Meng, who had been interned in Vancouver in a luxury mansion, was freed and returned on a chartered airliner to China at the same time that Kovrig and Spavor boarded a plane out of China with Canadian Ambassador Dominic Barton. Were. Country.
Spavor arrived in his hometown of Calgary on Saturday morning with Kovrig aboard a Canadian Forces Challenger jet, and the pair were received by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau before Kovrig made the final leg of his trip to Toronto.
“I am delighted to finally be reunited with my family. Beginning to understand the continued support we are receiving from Canadians and people around the world,” Spavor said in a statement released Friday by Global Affairs Canada. It’s humble.”

Spavor and Kovrig spent almost all of their time in captivity in different prisons, most of it in solitary confinement.
The message included a smiling spawner and an attached photo of a large gray dog.
