Three members of Congress from Michigan are asking the US Justice Department inspector general to conduct a formal investigation into why the department closed its investigation into nursing home deaths in the state.
The DOJ announced on July 22 that it would close its investigation into COVID-19 deaths at Michigan nursing homes and whether those deaths were due to Gov. Gretchen was the result of Whitmer’s policies. The investigation began during the administration of former President Donald Trump.
“Families across the state are seeking answers as to why their loved ones were locked up in facilities with Covid,” according to letter signed by republicans US Reps. Lisa McClain, Tim Wahlberg, and Bill Huizenga.
Three members of Congress noted that as of July 21, 2021, 5,681 people had died in long-term care facilities in the state.
“For more than a year, Michiganders have sought answers from their governor to no avail,” he wrote. “Last year, it looked like the Justice Department was finally going to get an answer from Governor Whitmer for the people of Michigan. That hope was dashed by the department’s decision on July 22, 2021.”
Lawmakers ask who within the department called for the investigation to end, what information officials had gathered from Whitmer’s office, whether the Biden administration, and in particular the White House, interfered with the investigation.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced in March that her office would also not investigate, saying her department determined there was not enough evidence to support an official investigation.
Nessel wrote at the time, “While I will not hesitate to take action when appropriate, I will not abuse the investigative powers of this department to launch political attacks on any state official.”
Eric Ventimiglia, executive director of Michigan Rising Action, argued that the Justice Department under President Joe Biden’s administration is protecting Whitmer, a fellow Democrat.
“Democrats make a brazen attempt to give Governor Whitmer political cover to avoid being held accountable for his deadly nursing home scandal,” Ventimiglia said in a statement.
