Mick Schumacher pissed off at not being traded to Kevin Magnussen in Austria

An angry Mick Schumacher was left to question his team’s decisions after losing to Lewis Hamilton in the Austrian Grand Prix sprint.

Schumacher struggled with Hamilton towards the end of the race, as the two vied for the final scoring place, the Haas driver was able to hold the fastest Mercedes at the start with the help of DRS.

The German was within the DRS range of his teammate Kevin Magnussen, which allowed him to keep Hamilton narrowly behind him, but in the end Magnussen advanced by more than a second and blocked Schumacher’s DRS lead.

Schumacher got on the team radio to ask Magnussen to slow down, but this order was not passed or not followed as Hamilton ended up passing, taking Schumacher out of the points.

After the race, a visibly furious Schumacher told Sky Sports F1 that he believes he should have been switched to Magnussen as he had a better pace.

Schumacher: “I think it’s something to be discussed, but obviously I think the battle with Lewis was fun, but it shouldn’t have happened in the first place. In a way, I was a little faster, so…”

Interviewer: “Should you have been switched with Kevin?”

Schumacher: “Yes.”

Interviewer: “Did you have that talk on the radio?”

Schumacher: “Yes.”

Interviewer: “And the team said no?”

Schumacher: “Yes.”

Interviewer: “Did the team give you a reason why they didn’t trade you?”

Schumacher: “This is something I have to understand.”

In his interview, Magnussen said he was not asked by the team to switch seats, but said it was a “big day” for Haas.

“Obviously I can’t hear what Mick says,” Magnussen told Sky Sports F1. “But you know, it’s a big day for us. We got two points, we will start in P7 and P9 for tomorrow’s main race. We really cannot be disappointed in this at all.”

To make Schumacher’s day worse, he was reminded of a possible penalty coming his way for a breach of opening procedure. Schumacher wasn’t sure why he was being investigated.

“Let’s see,” Schumacher said. “There’s one thing I could think of that I had a breakdown and was in front of Kevin, but then I let him go. Other than that, I really don’t know if there’s anything I did wrong. I do not think. Maybe I was out of position again.”
