The Ministry of Defense (MIDE) begins the commemoration of the 126th anniversary of the death of the illustrious Major General Gregorio Luperón, this Sunday, with a wreath-laying ceremony at the National Pantheon.
The Armed Forces pay tribute to the hero of the restoration of the Republic, whose enduring legacy of gratitude and commitment to emulation keeps alive the ideals of liberty and freedom as well as the nation against any attempt to annex or protect it.
After reading the agenda, Colonel Historian Socrates Suazo Ruiz, ERD, General Director of Military History of MIDE, gave words of thought and highlighted the existential importance of General Luperón, a strong-willed personality. Excellence in personal and social terms, as a soldier with clear intelligence, remarkable values, love of work, motherland and courage in deed against the Spanish occupation.
That period, called the “Six Years’ War”, began with the plans of President Buenaventura Báez to establish the sovereignty of the nascent country under the protectorate of the United States, between the years 1868–1874.
In addition to his outstanding military career, Luperón also served as President of the Republic twice, in 1879 and from 1880 to 1882. During his tenure, he promoted social justice, education, and the country’s economic development, and progress and equity for future generations”, highlighted Suazo Ruiz.
The ceremony was presided over by Col. Milton Castillo Nolasco, ERD, (DEM), Executive Officer of the Armed Forces Metropolitan Joint Command, represented by the Defense Minister, Lt. Gen. Carlos Luciano Diaz Morfa, ERD. He was accompanied by commissions from the Army, Navy, Air Force and National Police.
