Miss USA transmission contestant Cataluna Henriquez ponders exit

Cataluna Henriquez, the first openly trans woman to compete in the Miss USA pageant, recently considered dropping out of the tournament.

In an interview published Wednesday by Yahoo Life, the health administrator and clothing designer talked about her experiences fighting for the coveted Miss USA crown after she failed to reach the final 16 of the tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Monday.

In the end, the title was sent on Tuesday to El Smith, a Kentucky TV news reporter.

“I was honored to represent my community and be an example for the little queer kids who now know they don’t need to be constrained by the standards of society,” Enriquez told Yahoo.

Enriquez made history in June when she became the first open trans winner of the Miss Nevada pageant. After she didn’t make it to the national competition, the model told Yahoo that she was “shocked” and “disappointed.”

“I’ve worked so hard for this,” she said. “I guess they just weren’t ready.”

On Wednesday, the pioneering beauty queen shared an adorable group photo from the event and reminisced on Instagram of her trip to Miss USA.

“By participating in the competition, I was prepared to face challenges and conflicts due to our political climate and divisions,” Henriquez wrote. “I came with a biased assessment of beliefs and attitudes according to your position, and I am so grateful that I was wrong. Thanks to all the women who welcomed me and those who took the time to understand me. “

Acting as the press during her tenure as Miss Nevada, Henriquez has consistently used her platform to empower others from marginalized communities and share her own success story. Before becoming the state’s beauty queen, Henriquez got her start in fashion design by sewing her own dresses because she couldn’t find dresses to fit her body or budget.

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to show you and show the world a different side of a story that is often not told correctly,” she continued on Instagram.

“For every person who has ever felt invisible or turned down the opportunity to become their best self, this is for you. I am a living example of the impossible. Don’t let expectations and social standards stop you from living your truth and pursuing your dreams. ”
