MLS 2022 season will start and end earlier due to the World Cup

With the start of the first-ever Winter World Cup looming in November next year, Major League Soccer will cut its 34-game regular season to 32 weeks in 2022, starting in late February and ending in early October.

With the 28th team joining the league in Charlotte, North Carolina, the MLS will return to balanced bargaining tables with 14 teams, sending Nashville from East to West. This will make travel even more difficult for western teams as the conference expands nearly 600 miles east, with Vancouver and Nashville nearly 2,600 miles apart.

The longest trip in the Eastern Conference from Montreal to Miami is less than 1,700 miles, and most of these teams are within two hours of flight from New York. Only one eastern team is outside the eastern time zone.

All 28 teams will face their 13 conference opponents twice, home and away, and will play 8 of the 14 teams from the other conference. Most matches will be played on weekends, with no more than five games in the middle of the week, one each in May, June and July, and two in August.

The 2022 regular season kicks off on February 26, the earliest start date in league history, and ends on October 9. With the MLS Cup taking place on December 11 this year, the upcoming offseason will be one of the shortest in history for the two. finalists.

The final of the MLS Cup 2022 will take place on November 5, nine days before the mandatory release date for national teams and nine days before the start of the World Cup in Qatar. The full MLS regular season schedule will be announced later this year.
