Kadine Christie’s birth story is one she has been told over and over again. She was born in the mountain town of Spalding, Jamaica, in the presence of two women: her mother, Lorna, and a stranger, Lurline, who were going into childbirth in the same open ward.
Lorna and Lurline were the first generation to have the option of giving birth in a hospital. They were seated on adjacent beds – separated by a curtain, associated with the fear of childbirth.
This is a story that sounds like fantasy, but is far from it. It has high stakes, unexpected connections and a surprising ending. Something astonishing – even magical – was born in that maternity ward 40 years ago. Tune in to find out why Kadin’s birth story is also her love story.
Today’s little love story
A Hussey with a smiley crab caught Sarah Reynolds Westin’s attention when she was shopping for baby clothes with a pregnant friend.
Sarah told Mia Lee, co-host of the Modern Love Podcast, “She found out that she was pregnant right when I discovered that I couldn’t have children.” “And I think I tried to comfort myself by supporting her during her pregnancy.”
Eight days after seeing Hussey, Sara said, her “world was turned upside down.”
“I really believe that we were all meant to be together, that we were connected,” she said of her son’s entry into his life.
