Modified Dolphins Enter Mandatory Minicamp and Questions Remain

The Miami Dolphins’ off-season workout schedule changes this week from organized team activities to mandatory minicamps, with sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

New coach Mike McDaniel, in his first several runs as head coach of the NFL, continues to establish an offseason model of work ethic that he wants his team to have before heading off to training camp.

“You’re first trying to identify a standard you play with and a standard you practice with,” McDaniel said of organized team activities last week.

“Within him, that’s where your camaraderie is and that’s where your relationships are built. There’s blood, sweat, and tears that are hard-earned, and you’re trying to get a team to fix that.” What will be the standard of their game – and then you want to maintain that standard because that’s the way you work and function as a football team.”

The Dolphins already have almost the entire squad for voluntary OTAs over the past two weeks, but now all healthy players are expected to come together in the Dolphins’ practice area to see what’s best on the 2022 squad before training camp opens. Will be At the end of July.

Most notably, cornerback Xavian Howard and left tackle Teron Armstead could join the team for an offseason workout, the team’s prized free-agent upgrades on the offensive line.

Howard missed last year’s mandatory minicamp while he was with the team over his contract. He has since been pacified – first, in training camp ahead of the 2021 season and then with his renegotiated deal.

While the Dolphins did not have Howard or No. 2 cornerback Byron Jones to defend his revised receiving corps during the OTA, it is unknown whether Jones is ready to return for the minicamp following surgery on his lower left leg. .

Armstead also had knee surgery, which troubled him during his final season with the New Orleans Saints. He played just eight games last year and missed a meeting with the Dolphins on Monday night, December 27.

“I had a procedure in the off-season,” Armstead said during his introductory press conference in March. “Cleaned up some stuff from last year. I feel great. When we start out I’m just rehabilitating, training and preparing myself to roll.

While not attending Miami’s OTA drills, Armstead was seen working out post-practice with a pair of Dolphins linemen, in one of the sessions open to the media after their second season, Liam Eichenberg and Robert Jones was going in.

The Dolphins have got an early glimpse of what the 2022 team will look like. Offensively, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is able to get a feel for throwing fast off-season takeover Tyrek Hill, who brings in six Pro Bowl selections and one Super Bowl Miami’s receiving corps. Pieces of McDaniel’s run game are established, while Raheem Mostart, who is already familiar with McDaniel with the San Francisco 49ers, takes a slow pace in his return from last season’s knee injury.

The offensive line, the team’s most troublesome unit in 2021, could potentially start to see what it looks like with Armstead in left tackle at the minicamp. According to McDaniel, his position is one that has solidified on the line. Questions remain over how the rest of the group will line up.

While the Dolphins can continue to mix and match throughout the offseason, Conor Williams, a guard for four years with the Dallas Cowboys, is being given a shot in the center, and others have positional flexibility between guard and tackle. – Or the guard and center deity for Michael.

Defensively, the unit retained from last season could inch closer to a full comeback if Howard is present in the secondary and with defensive end Emmanuel Ogba, a major re-signing this offseason, causing a pass rush. Recently the former Pro has also been added. Bowl defensive end Melvin Ingram.

After a two-practice minicamp, the Dolphins end their off-season schedule with the final week of the OTA with a session open to the media the following Tuesday.
