Moeen Ali predicted which side India vs England 5th Test would go, said- ‘India would have won last year but…’

A lot has changed for both India and England since the fifth Test of the 2021 series between the two teams was postponed last year. Both teams have new captains and coaches, but India haven’t given much of a chance to their way of playing cricket, with England looking to launch a radical offensive under new captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum. The batting approach is adopted. ,

India have played three Test series since current head coach Rahul Dravid took over and one under captain Rohit Sharma. Continuing their dominance at home against New Zealand and Sri Lanka, they lost to South Africa away from home. They will now face England in the fifth Test, postponed from July 1, before they played a warm-up match in Leicestershire.

All-rounder Moeen Ali, who recently reversed his Test retirement, said as England beat New Zealand 3-0 to prepare for the match, India have only practice matches and a few net sessions.

“Had this series ended last year, India would have won it. If you had asked me 4-5 weeks ago, I would have said India would win. But now I think England will win. India are a bit underpowered,” Moeen told Birmingham on Tuesday.

“Last year, India had four matches. This time he has a practice game and some net sessions. At the moment, in my opinion, England are the favourites, because they have played three good Tests now, and the way they are playing, they are very confident compared to last year. His mindset has changed and he is playing positive cricket. India will still be very difficult. They have a great bowling side,” said Moeen.

Moeen also pointed out that the lack of opening combination of KL Rahul and Rohit, both of whom scored centuries in the series last year, will hurt India. While Rahul has been ruled out for the tour due to injury, Rohit’s involvement is in doubt after testing positive for Covid-19.

“I also think the combination with KL Rahul and Rohit, the way they were batting last year. , , They were the real problem (for England) as they were giving India a great start most of the time by looking at the new ball. KL Rahul is a huge miss, and will likely miss out on Rohit. So, I believe England is the favourite.”

Moeen had retired from Test cricket in 2021 after the fourth Test of the series and said head coach McCullum was a big reason why he decided to reverse his decision.

“I’ve played with McCullum at RCB, and we get along well. As soon as he got the job (England), he called me, just asked me if I wanted to play (Test cricket). And for how much It’s going to be fun, so, it wasn’t so much the fact that Root and Silverwood were the captain and coach. I think the mindset changed with Stokes and McCullum taking over. That’s the kind of brand of cricket they want to play. Cricket is what I like to play.

“We weren’t playing well as a team, and were a bit disorganized etc…” he said.
