This Wednesday, Montana became the first state in the United States to ban the social network TikTok.
By the way, the governor of Montana, Greg Gianforte, signed the digital platform ban law to “protect private and personal data.”
Last month, the Montana state Congress approved a bill to ban the platform, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, on residents’ mobile devices.
So far, Montana’s ban is the toughest in the United States and goes beyond the federal government’s veto to prevent officials in all 50 states from installing the app on their phones.
The FBI, members of Congress, state officials, and many other sectors of the US Union have repeatedly expressed their concern about the possibility that TikTok could be used by China to spy on United States government officials and companies. Used to be.
The United States is not the only one that has TikTok to cyber security issues, as a few weeks ago the United Kingdom fined the Chinese digital platform a sum of one million dollars.
TikTok was fined 12.7 million pounds sterling (14.4 million euros) for illegally using personal data of minors, besides allowing around 1.4 million 13-year-olds to use the platform in 2020 as reported by the British digital regulator.
Similarly, the European Commission and the European Council, which represent the 27 EU member states, have ordered similar bans in the past for cyber security reasons.
The New Zealand government has also banned the above apps on all mobile devices of MPs from March 31.
“On the advice of our cyber security experts, the Parliamentary Service has informed members and staff that the TikTok app will be removed from all devices with access to the parliamentary network,” said Rafael Gonzalez Monteiro, chief executive of the Parliamentary Service.
Chinese firm ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has been questioned by several Western countries who are suspicious of access to user data by Chinese authorities.
India took the first such action in 2020, banning various Chinese apps following several skirmishes along the disputed border between the two Asian giants.
