Traffic accidents in Cuba continue to leave an unfortunate balance in the families who lost a loved one. In the first four months of 2023 alone, more than 200 people have died due to this reason. The negative data was released by the Special Traffic Body of the police in Cuba through analyst and 1st Lt. Ayold Borges. “During the first four months of 2023, nearly 1,500 accidents were recorded in Cuba, with more than 200 deaths and nearly 4,000 injuries.”
The expert also indicated that one in five people involved in traffic accidents have died so far this year. The figure is alarming, however, as it means that the number of deaths has decreased when compared to the same period last year.
Main causes of accidents
The analyst himself confirmed that there are many reasons for traffic accidents in Cuba. The most frequent ones include violation of the right of way, not paying due attention, speeding of vehicles and technical damage.
It is highlighted that 94% of traffic accidents are caused by the human factor. Meanwhile, in 35% of these types of incidents, reported since January 1, 2023, mopeds are the protagonists.
2022 ended with 9,848 traffic accidents in Cuba, a number that was a record compared to previous years. During 12 months, 700 people died for this reason, almost two per day, 68 of whom were minors. The total number of injured rose to 7,547.
Lastly, the Specialized Traffic Authority revealed that there were almost 1,500 more accidents than in 2021. During that year, there were 8,369 accidents, resulting in a negative balance of 589 deaths.
