CHICAGO ( Associated Press) — An Indiana woman heard her late daughter’s heartbeat inside the chest of a 68-year-old Illinois man who underwent a heart transplant.
Amber Morgan and Tom Johnson met Saturday four years after receiving the heart of Andriana Williams, who died of complications from asthma when she was 20.
The Chicago Tribune reported that the Indiana Donor Network hosted an unusual gathering at a Chicago hotel.
“It’s almost like I’m hugging my daughter all over again,” said the woman who held the stethoscope to Johnson’s chest. “It’s amazing,” he said.
Kankakee, Ill. Kay Johnson said he sent a letter to Morgan in 2019, a year after the transplant at Loyola University Medical Center in suburban Chicago. I want to thank you for the family’s decision to donate the heart.
He also sent a second letter, but received no response until recently, when Morgan said he wanted to meet, especially after his heart problems.
Johnson struggled with a weak heart since childhood. Doctors tried a pacemaker and defibrillator before telling him that an implant was the best solution.
“It opened up a whole new world of possibilities,” Johnson said. “It’s amazing. I mean, I can exercise in the garden, ride a bike. My kids can’t believe how fast I can go.”
His wife, Sharon, said Williams had a special heart.
He said, ‘He takes special care of them. “He never misses his heart medicine. Never”.
