June 1 is observed as the day to fight against leishmaniosis. Like every year, MSD Animal Health will conduct an awareness campaign for a whole week. This year, in addition, MSD Animal Health will donate Scalibor® collars to the Bichos Raros Protective Association
Leishmaniosis: a disease that requires special attention
Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by protozoa leishmania spp. (mostly l baby) and is spread by the bite of an insect called sand fly. It is a zoonotic disease that affects millions of animals and people. Leishmaniosis is one of the most important diseases worldwide. WHO estimates that between 700,000 and 1,000,000 new cases occur in people each year, although only about 200,000 are documented (WHO, 2023).
Leishmaniosis is endemic in Spain, and due to the general rise in temperature, sand flies can be found, transmitters of leishmaniathroughout the year and in areas where they previously did not exist.
There are various reservoirs for the protozoa that cause leishmaniosis in Spain, such as rabbits, rodents and other wildlife. However, due to the high prevalence of the disease in this species as well as its proximity to humans, the most relevant reservoir in Spain is the dog. In some areas of southern Spain, the seroprevalence of canine leishmaniasis can reach almost 60% (Galvez and others., 2020). Millions of dogs are infected in Europe l baby,
Leishmaniasis Awareness
To mark the day of fight against leishmaniosis, MSD Animal Health will undertake various awareness activities through various channels, discussing the disease and the most effective prevention methods.
Scalibor® collar is the only repellent that has demonstrated repellent efficacy against sandflies of up to 98% for 12 months (Evans) and others., 2022). Therefore, using a repellent such as Scalibor® not only protects healthy dogs from sandfly bites, but also if your dog is positive for leishmaniaBy preventing the sand fly from biting you, you are also preventing the sand fly from becoming infected and potentially transmitting the parasite to other dogs.

As part of the Fight Against Leishmaniosis Day actions, MSD Animal Health will donate Scalibor® collars to help protect the health of dogs in federal care as well as prevent the spread of leishmaniasis, leishmaniasis .
