CHICAGO (WNN) – Garbine Muguruza and Ons Jabur won in straight sets in the second round of the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic on Tuesday.
Muguruza said the tough conditions were challenging during her 6-4, 6-4 win over 21-year-old American Ann Lee.
“It was a difficult match simply because (Chicago) is a windy city or a windy city,” Muguruza said. “Just controlling the mindset and not getting too frustrated because it is difficult. With 6-4, 6-4, it was very tight. I think the match was pretty even because of the conditions, but I’m glad I stayed calm at 5-4, serving for each set, and I managed to close them.
Tunisia’s No. 6 Jabeur defeated Su-Wei Seh 6-1, 6-0 in 46 minutes.
Seventh seed Elise Mertens, 11th seed Annette Kontaveit and 14th seed Victoria Azarenka also advanced in straight sets.
Italy’s 15th seed Camilla Giorgi lost to Romania’s Elena-Gabriella Russe 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles, Polish pair of Magdalena Frech and Katarjina Cava defeated Belgian pair of Kim Clijsters and Kirsten Flipkens 6-4, 6-2 in the first round.
1 and US Open champion in 2009 and 2010, Clijsters was knocked out of the singles category in a three-set loss on Monday, her first WTA Tour match since a first-round loss at last year’s US Open.
