Multiple injuries reported in Meriwale Road blast and fire. CBC News

Several people were injured in an apparent explosion and fire on Merivale Road in the city’s Nepean area, according to Ottawa police and paramedics.

Firefighters say they were battling a third alarm fire at Merivale, between Cleopatra Drive and Slack Road, after 2 p.m. Thursday.

A spokesman for the Ottawa Fire Services told CBC News that 911 callers reported seeing flames 15 to 18 meters in the air. He said the building that caught fire and the surrounding area has been evacuated.

Police say they have closed Merivale between West Hunt Club and MacFarlane Streets because of the fire.

Details about specific injuries are not yet available.

Mario Menville, who worked with Freedom Harley-Davidson, heard about a dozen “booms” coming from the building.

“Now we can see big white smoke. We saw the building going down,” he said less than an hour after the explosion was reported.
