Nation World News has been told the boy’s father made the discovery when he returned home. He called triple-0 and performed CPR but his son was unable to be revived.
The woman was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she remains under police guard.
Victoria Police said it is not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this stage.
Homicide detectives are now investigating if the family tragedy was an attempted murder-suicide.
“It’s actually very hard to comprehend … it’s devastating, absolutely, nothing worse,” one neighbor told Nation World News. “You come past the scene and you see the front door is open and you just want to go in and grab the baby, but it’s not there … it’s horrible.”
Another local said: “It is really, really heartbreaking … the little boy hasn’t even lived their life.”
