Against the cancellation of the game
Muttenzercurve Lucerne. I want to tarnish the national festival
Lucerne Police did not grant permission for Sunday’s Lucerne-FCB match as the planned national celebration and expected would be a huge risk to Basel fans. Mutnazer Curve is now responding with a protest call.
Crazy: FC Luzern will not play again next weekend. In the first round, the installation of undersoil heating in Lucerne and the Totten Hausen concert in Zurich made the Lucerne–GC game impossible. Now even the third round game between Lucerne and FC Basel cannot take place.
In early June, the Lucerne police did not allow the duel planned for Sunday, July 31st. Reason: The national festival of 1st August is also taking place on the same day at Europaplatz. The expected FCB fans would represent a very large risk.
Now here’s the tit-for-tat from Basel: In a statement published on its website, Muttner Curve makes it clear that it finds the authorities’ argument “absurd in many respects” – and calls for protest action: ” We want to set an example: despite the postponed games let’s travel to Lucerne – in this case, stop at the National Day celebrations!”
“Least Not Interested”
The Muttenzer curve is “upset over the alleged reason that we FCB fans will be in town before the game, thereby clashing with the national celebration at Europaplatz that day”.
The festivities “at least” would not interest Basel fans, and were geographically limited to the square in front of the KKL, “with a comparatively manageable number of participants”.
Furthermore, they have actually only been in town once in recent years, which makes FCB supporters mean the events of January, when police and fans clashed after the game. At that time, fan marches were not permitted from the train station to Swissporarena.
“Welcome everyone to the national festival”
Now the Muttzer curve Europaplatz wants to go “in civil” or “in Schwyz-Liebli”. Federal Counselor Ellen Bursett will also be present there. Only recently, along with the entire Federal Council, did he speak in favor of treating football fans even more harshly.
Is there a danger of escalating tension in the city on Sunday? When asked by Blick, Lucerne police said they were aware of the call for the Mützenger curve and were in contact with the organizer of the national festival. Then she declares: “Welcome everyone to the national festival. As long as the celebration is peaceful and the visitors behave decently, we at the police have no reason to interfere.”
As usual, the authorities do not provide any information about the police deployment. (red)
Why not just play in Basel?
It is unclear when the Lucerne-Basel game will be played. At the moment, there is no catch-up date. Reason: The league will have to wait and see how far FCB can reach in the European Cup in the new season. If Basel go through the qualifying rounds and get tickets to the group stage of the conference league again, it will be very difficult to play games in 2022.
Then there will probably be only one week in November, where the Swiss Cup will have a round of 16. If FCB leaves Europe early, there should be no problem finding a date in late summer or autumn.
But why not just play at St. Jacob’s Park instead of Lucerne on July 31st? It turns out here that Basel has the same problem. When asked by Blick, FC Basel said: “Due to the celebrations at Basel-Stadt on 31 July, like every year, the FCB recorded this date as the blocked date for the league.”
By the way: even simply postponing the Lucerne-Basel game until Saturday, July 30 was not an option. First, FCB will play the Crusaders in Northern Ireland in the second qualifying round for the Conference League on Thursday. Secondly, Lucerne Police have not allowed Saturday night games against a large number of teams for some time. (red)
