Washington: New images captured by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter show a mysterious rocket crashed on the far side of the Moon, leaving a double crater behind it.

The collision resulted in two overlapping impact sites. NASA said in a statement that one crater is 59 feet and the other is 52.5 feet.

Astronomers were already expecting an impact after the discovery of an unidentified space object on a collision course with the Moon. However, they did not expect a double crater.

“No other rocket body impact on the Moon created double craters,” the space agency said in a press release.

NASA said that the double crater could be caused by a rocket that has massive amounts of mass at both ends.

While “a spent rocket has mass concentrated at the end of the motor, the rest of the rocket stage consists primarily of an empty fuel tank,” NASA explained.

However, the agency believes that the mass at both ends of the rocket could help them identify its origin.

Bill Gray, the astronomer who first discovered the extraterrestrial object and alerted NASA, said in a blog Project Pluto:

“I must admit that I naively thought that it would be easy to find and located immediately after impact.”

So far no country or agency has claimed responsibility for the collision.
