“It was like an out-of-body experience. I was terrified, I was confused, ”recalls Lana Wood. Lana, now 75 years old and about eight years old when the alleged incident occurred, remembered how her sister and their mother agreed that publicly accusing Natalie would ruin Natalie’s career.
According to Little Sister, “soak it up,” was how Maria advised Natalie Wood to die in 1981 when her body was found off Catalina Island in California. The authorities initially ruled that death was an accidental drowning, but this changed after years of careful study and new witnesses. At the time, Wood’s husband, Robert Wagner, was named a person of interest, and Lana Wood is among those who hold him responsible for her death.
In her book, Lana Wood recalls promising her sister not to discuss Douglas’ assault on her, but rumors were so widespread that when he died in 2020 at the age of 103, Natalie Wood’s name appeared on Twitter alongside his name. Lana Wood, whose own acting work includes The Searchers and Peyton Place, believes that enough has changed since her conversation with Natalie so that she can now tell the whole story.
“Since there is no one else to protect, I am sure that she will forgive me for finally breaking this promise,” she wrote.
Douglas’s son, actor Michael Douglas, said in a statement released through his publicist, “May they both rest in peace.”
