On July 5, local authorities kidnapped Falun Gong believer Yao Kangqiang, a resident of Pingyi Village in Beixin Town. They took Yao to a brainwashing center located at the Jingguo Hotel. The businessmen went on hunger strike to protest the abuse. Two days later, his condition developed and he was released. But a day later he was taken back. Currently, he is forced to run away from his house to escape police harassment.

In the northern province of Hebei, 85-year-old Falun Gong follower Zhang Wanxin is a resident of Tangshan City. On August 19, police officers kidnapped Zhang while he was discussing Falun Gong with locals at a local fair in Luan’an County. The elderly man was released on “trial pending bail”.

However, soon after, he was sentenced by a local court to one year and six months in prison, with a probation period of 2 years and a fine of 1,000 yuan ($155).
