Neeraj Chopra’s best performance in the final came in his second attempt.

Indian javelin world champion Neeraj Chopra had to settle for silver in the 2023 Diamond League final. They failed to defend the title they won last year.

In the final event of the current season on Sunday and Monday evening, Neeraj took second place with a distance of 83.80 meters while Jakub Vadlech of the Czech Republic won gold with a distance of 84.24 meters. The Finnish thrower Oliver Helander came third (83.74 meters).

The 25-year-old Neeraj had qualified for the final by finishing second with a best score of 85.71 meters in the 11th meet of this league in Zurich, Switzerland. He won gold in the league’s final season.

Neeraj’s best shot came in his second attempt
Neeraj’s best shot came in his second attempt in the American city of Eugene. His first attempt was a foul. He made a brilliant comeback and threw the javelin 83.80 meters. With this rating he took second place in the rating list and stayed in this position until the end.

Neeraj threw the javelin 81.37 meters in the third attempt. His fourth attempt was ruled a foul. Neeraj managed 80.74 m in the 5th attempt. And reached sixth place with 80.90 meters. While Jacob, who won gold, started with 84.01 meters. His second, third and fourth attempts were fouls. Then Jacob scored 82.58. In the last attempt he improved his score and covered a distance of 84.24 meters.

Jakub Vadlech of the Czech Republic won gold with a score of 84.24 meters.

First Indian athlete to win a medal at the Olympics
Neeraj is the first Indian athlete to win Olympic and World Championship gold simultaneously. He won gold at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. India has been participating in the Olympics since 1900, but before Neeraj, no Indian had won a medal of any color, let alone gold, in athletics events.

Ahead of Neeraj, Milkha Singh and PT Usha, fourth place at various Olympics was India’s best performance.

What is Diamond League?
The Daemung League is an athletics tournament consisting of 16 athletics events (men’s and women’s). It is organized every year in different cities around the world.

The Diamond League Athletics Series takes place annually from May to September and concludes the season with the Diamond League Finals. Normally the number of competitions in a Diamond League season is 14, including the finals, but sometimes this number changes.

In each event, the top 8 players receive points, the first place player receives 8 points and the eighth place player receives one point. After 13 events, all players’ points are counted. Players who make it to the top 10 will earn a spot in the Diamond League finals. The winning player receives the trophy and the cash prize of the Diamond League winner.
