Nevada GOP Governor’s Candidate Spends Thousands on Advertising in Far Florida to Get Trump’s Attention

CARSON CITY, NV (AP) – Nevada governor candidate Michelle Fiore walks out of a Ford F-150 with a pistol to her hip in a campaign advertisement and reveals to viewers that she was one of the first elected officials to back Donald Trump ahead of the election. 2016 Nov.

“You better believe I was attacked for this,” Fiore says, reaffirming his commitment to the former president as a country rock guitar riff plays in the background.

She hopes Trump is watching.

In addition to buying ads in Nevada’s media markets, like its competitors, Fiore is investing campaign funds to broadcast its 60-second segment in Palm Beach, Florida, where the former president spends winters at his Mar-a-Lago club.

Her campaign spent $ 6,270 airing 62 Fox News TV spots on the West Palm Beach-Fort Pierce media market in the last week of November, FCC filings show. Since leaving office, Trump has divided his time between Florida, his official residence, and his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he spent most of last summer.

When Fiore’s commercial aired during Thanksgiving, he and his family were in Mar-a-Lago.

Michelle Fiore, a Las Vegas city councilor, is one of at least 10 candidates running for governor of Nevada, a vacillating state that Trump lost by a small margin in 2020.

Candidates and interest groups have long used targeted cable ads as a way to connect with television-obsessed Trump, often lining up locations in Washington and Florida to grab his attention when he’s in the White House or on vacation.

Fiore’s move reflects Trump’s enduring post-presidential influence in the GOP and highlights that his support is viewed by Republicans involved in primary battles across the country as a potential tipping point.

Since Trump left the White House, much of the battle for his attention has been fought in Florida. In one particularly striking example, the multi-faceted billboard on the boulevard connecting Palm Beach International Airport to Mar-a-Lago is often adorned with messages from supporters and opponents.

At the club, Trump has hosted dozens of fundraisers and other events for Republicans running for the U.S. Senate, governors and other offices, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, South Dakota Governor Christie Noem, and Sarah Sanders, his former press secretary who is now running for president. Governor of Arkansas. This place tends to guarantee a good performance thanks to its loyal paid membership and Trump’s frequent appearance, even at events he doesn’t host.

He also welcomed a number of candidates seeking his support, including Idaho Lieutenant Governor Janice McGeachin, who is running against incumbent Republican Governor Brad Little. Trump endorsed McGichin a week after she visited Mar-a-Lago in November.

Fiore, a Las Vegas city councilor, is one of at least 10 candidates running for governor of Nevada, a vacillating state that Trump lost by a small margin in 2020.

In 2012, she was elected to the Nevada State Building, where she championed gun rights and presented a controversial proposal that would sharply curtail federal authority over state land and waters in Nevada. Her connections and support for rancher Cliven Bundy and his family during armed clashes between self-proclaimed members of the civilian militia and federal law enforcement brought her to the attention of the entire country in 2014 and 2016.

Fiore is working on a platform this year that includes opposition to coronavirus mandates, law enforcement support against protesters she calls “domestic terrorists,” and a reversal of Nevada’s decision to send all active voters mail-in ballot papers.

Other candidates running for the June 2022 Republican primaries include former U.S. Senator Dean Heller, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo, and Joey Gilbert, Reno’s attorney who was stationed outside the U.S. Capitol during last year’s uprising. The winner will take on Democrat Governor Steve Sisolak, who won by 5.1 percentage points in 2018.

Trump officials did not respond to questions about whether he saw Fiore’s ad or planned to run for governor of Nevada.

The Fiore campaign has also spent over $ 100,000 broadcasting ads in Reno, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, where the media market is expanding into rural northeastern Nevada. Targeting Florida broadcasts in addition to Nevada is just a reminder of her long-standing support, according to her campaign consultant Rory McShane.

“Many candidates are looking for Trump’s support, but if you look back four and five years ago, you will see that many of the same candidates have disowned Trump and even held anti-Trump rallies,” McShane said.

“It is important to remind the presidential team that Michele Fiore is the only true America First presidential candidate running for governor,” he added.

Heller, who told The Associated Press last week that he would also welcome Trump’s support, clashed with Trump over attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act in 2017, but they made up and campaigned together in 2018 when the then-House member US Representatives Jackie Rosen defeats Heller in Nevada Senate Race.

Fiore is the only candidate running for office in a state office outside Florida as of 2020, according to a review of FCC filings, buying ads from Comcast, a cable TV provider in the region.

“This tells me that – assuming the goal here is to get noticed by former President Trump – the ad is aimed at an audience of one person, not an audience of thousands or millions of voters,” said a professor at the University. Vanderbilt John. Sides, a political scientist who has written about the impact of television advertising on political campaigns.

“The calculation is that if you can get on the president’s radar screen or get his support,” Sides said, “that support will be worth the investment in buying advertising on the media market thousands of miles away.”
