Car sales in Colombia fell 33.4% in April, as only 13,740 units were registered compared to 20,622 registered in the same month last year.
This is evidenced by vehicle registration reports from Fenalco and Andy, the unions that represent the industry and import of vehicles and motorcycles.
The decrease is noticeable in almost all sectors of the automotive market, as sales of hybrid vehicles declined by 35.7%, but sales of electric vehicles increased by 33.6% compared to April last year. Commercialization of cargo vehicles has decreased by 40%.
Last April, the cities with the biggest declines in vehicle registration were Barranquilla with 60.7%, Bucaramanga with 47%, Bogotá with 41.5% and Cali with 40.5%. In Medellin, the decrease was 29%, as 2,635 vehicles were registered compared to 3,709 in April 2022.
According to data from these associations, vehicle sales between January and April also saw a contraction of 22.4%, falling from 78,049 in the first four months of 2022 to 60,597 in the first four months of this 2023.
Brand and type
The five brands with the most registrations in the month of April were: Renault (2,250), Toyota (1,847), Mazda (1,640), Chevrolet (1,517) and Kia (986) with market shares in order of 16.4%, 13.4%, 11.9% %, 11.0% and 7.2% represent 60% of the total number of vehicles registered in the fourth month of the year.
By vehicle type, the highest sales were of so-called utilities with 5,855, followed by automobiles with 4,309, pick-ups with 1,434, cargoes with 825, and vans with 584.
With respect to hybrid vehicles, total sales in April stood at 1,699 units, as opposed to 2,162 in March and 2,176 in February.
Sales of electric vehicles also decreased slightly, with 316 units sold in March and 323 sold in February, with 314 units sold. Between January and April, a total of 1,131 electric vehicles were sold, down 15.5% from the 1,339 sold in the first four months of 2022.
The commercialization of cargo vehicles fell 11.8% so far this year as 4,384 were sold between January and April, as against 4,970 in the same month last year.
