Iquique. At the heliport of the Iquique Naval Base, the change of command ceremony of the Fourth Naval Zone was held on Tuesday, November 28, an opportunity where, after two years in command of the Zone, Rear Admiral Claudio Maldonado handed over his position to Captain in Navio Marcelo Zoppi.
The ceremony, led and attended by the Chief of the General Staff of the Navy, Vice Admiral Yerko Marcic, was attended by high civil and military authorities and special guests, led by the Presidential Delegate for the Tarapacá region, Daniel Quinteros. .
On the occasion and in his role as Comptroller, Vice Admiral Marcic announced the change of command, establishing the appointment of Rear Admiral Claudio Maldonado as the new Commander of Naval Operations and in turn appointing Captain Marcelo Zoppi as the new Commander in Chief of the Fourth Naval Zone.
In his farewell speech, Rear Admiral Maldonado recalled some of the most important milestones during his command of the Fourth Naval Zone, recognizing the work done by the Chilean Navy crews in the Northern Theater of Operations, where the cleanup stands . and rucos from the coast of Iquique, the deployment of the border within the framework of law 21,542, the continuous training of the dependent units and the constant concern for the protection of the water and maritime environment.
Likewise, he thanked the Institutions and organizations with which the Chilean Navy is associated from Arica to Taltal, which permanently support the work of the institution in the north of the country.
He concluded his words by saying: “I want to wish Commander Marcelo Zoppi, whom I have known since the Naval Academy and only a few days from being promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral, the greatest achievement and good luck; It is not by chance that he was appointed to the institutional High Command and assigned to this Naval Zone, knowing his personal qualities, his professional capacity and the beautiful family that accompanies him, represented today by his wife Verónica. I have no doubt that he will play a prominent role in ruling this jurisdiction.
