New Language Test for Immigration to Canada

If your next plan is to immigrate to Canada or apply for economy-class residency, keep in mind that starting next year there will be a new language test to evaluate immigration or citizenship applications.

Recently the department Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Authorized a new language test for those who wish to immigrate to the north of the American continent.

The IRCC said that these new tests could be implemented twice a year from 2023; at the beginning and in the middle.

This means that the English language skills tests IELTS and CELPIP and French TEF and TCF will no longer be the only options.

Do I need a language test to immigrate to Canada?

Language recognition tests, either English or French, are an essential part of the Canadian immigration process. The required marks depend on the program for which the candidate applies, whether it is a study, work or permanent residence visa.

These tests are taken for the purpose of demonstrating your communication skills in either of Canada’s two official languages, English or French. People between the ages of 18 and 54 are those who must have recognized the language test or demonstrated their potential in any other manner approved by the IRCC.

Which language tests are authorized by IRCC?

Until this year, the institutions authorized to implement the English Language Knowledge Test were; For IELTS and CELPIP and French language TEF and TCF.

These tests evaluate all four communication skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

For some provincial immigration programs, high scores are not required and can range from 4 points on the Canadian Language Benchmark Scale (CLB). However, a minimum of 7 CLB is required to apply for a work visa in the health sector.

It is important to note that it is not mandatory to have accreditation of both the languages (English and French), one of them is more than enough, as long as the examination is authorized by any institute approved by IRCC.

future plans

In view of the increasing demand for this type of testing, IRCC strives to develop and improve functions aimed at improving the language designation framework to streamline the process.
