New Range Rover Sport (2022): First test drive

The all-new Range Rover Sport (2022) combines the noble essence of the brand with dynamic brilliance. A very enjoyable first test drive with a representative of the expensive upper class.

At the top of the range, the new Range Rover Sport (2022) now sits with the BMW-supplied Biturbo V8, which gives the fine all-wheel drive athlete plenty of leg: 530 hp (390 kW) and up to 750 Newtons. meters of torque, catapulting this 4.4-litre petrol engine, the 2.4-tonne Gems can go from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds in an emergency. But that’s not all: thanks to the elaborately designed chassis with all the finesse, the Range proves to be an extremely agile vehicle despite its massive size of almost five meters. To make it work, Range Rover really throws everything into balance that the technology has to offer. First, the deterrent is all-wheel drive, which controls power delivery at lightning speed as needed and with foresight. He is supported by two electronically controlled differential locks – one in the middle and one in the rear axle. In addition, there is active roll compensation with 48-volt technology, which can generate up to 1400 Nm of torque per axle thus reliably preventing unwanted lateral tilt. The tires with a width of 285 on (optional) 23-inch rims produced the required grip on the first test drive. But the highlight of the sports chassis is its two-chamber air suspension, which allows the new Range Rover Sport (2022) to respond faster and more consistently to dynamic challenges than the set-up of its bigger brother, the Range Rover is (without ” game”). First test drive with the new Range Rover Sport (2022)

During our first test drive in the interior of Madrid, the new Range Rover Sport (222) was really able to inspire with feather-light and smooth steering. Of course, the active rear axle, which steers or countersteers up to 7.3 degrees depending on the situation, also plays its part. Whatever it is: no matter what radius we aim for, the game voluntarily enforces it and lets the car shrink for like 3.50 meters. The smooth running power steering also pretends to have very little mass. But when the empty range, which already weighs 2.4 tons, approaches the catch limit, it pushes equally hard on the outer edge of the curve and unexpectedly slowly but vigorously hits the maneuvering line. Calls the DSC (ESP) into action in a tight turn. The 2.20 meter wide SUV anyway prefers smooth cornering on angled corners. But of course the UK itself doesn’t want to be a racer as a “sport”, but continues to be suitable for rough off-road tours and flatters with a great comfort experience. In addition to the sensitively responding springs, the noise-canceling system hidden in the headrest also has a positive effect on long-range properties. We found the new Range Rover Sport (2022) to have excellent noise levels during our first test drive.

Huge V8 Biturbo in Range Rover

On the other hand, the creamy V8 of the new Range Rover Sport (2022) delivers incredibly powerful torque even at low engine speeds and chugs loudly and happily through the speed range if desired. However, our first test drive took a moment before it really gave up its full power. However, since the power development is extremely gentle, you feel it only when you are driving very fast or when you make very sensitive corrections to the accelerator pedal. In part-load operation, however, the V8 is completely sovereign. Even fans of the earlier five-liter V8 with supercharging should take comfort from the farming race, lower emissions and lower consumption – although the 16.7 liters were on-board computer with the mixed driving style. That’s five liters more than the WLTP standard – and without driving on the motorway at high speeds. As the saying goes: fun costs money. Also in the case of the elite Englishman, as the V8 is only available in the premium First Edition trim at the start of the sale and costs €142,600. Plug-in hybrids with 440 or 510 hp (324 or 375 kW, from 100,200 euros) and a good 100 km electric range are more economical and affordable. The cheapest sibling of the new Range Rover Sport (2022) from our first test drive is the 93,000 euro D250 in-line six-cylinder diesel – it’s fun too.

our conclusion

The new Range Rover Sport P530 AWD (2022) is not a sports car, as we have known since the first test drive at the latest. And that’s a good thing, because as before, it combines excellent comfort, extreme off-road maneuverability and a nice dash of driving pleasure without betraying its distinctive nature. Quite the contrary: inside and out it feels like it’s made of one piece – only more modern than ever!
