Maruti Jimny is one such product that everyone is eagerly waiting for. Recently, we received reports that Maruti is working on a 5-door variant of the Jimny. Mahindra is watching all these developments closely. Mahindra is working on Thar 5-door as well. But before that, Mahindra may have had something else in store. We expect Mahindra to work on a new cheaper variant of the Thar which could sit as the new base variant in the times to come. Why does Mahindra Thar need a new base model and what can this new variant offer? Let us discuss in today’s article.
Why does Thar need a new base variant?

Currently, Thar has a huge monopoly in the lifestyle segment. But the launch of Jimny could give a new look to things. Maruti is said to have a big bang with the Jimny launch. Hence Mahindra may introduce this new base variant to reduce the starting price. What else can Mahindra gain from this? This new variant will be pretty bare-bones so it could help Mahindra save on the microchips that could be used for other cars like the XUV700 and the upcoming Scorpio that is launched today.

Thar Base Model – Specifications

Mahindra will continue with mostly similar engine options. It will get 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engine options. So what can Mahindra change? It may get smaller 16-inch alloy wheels instead of 18-inch alloy wheels. However, the aspect ratio will be adjusted accordingly to retain its off-roading capabilities. Will Mahindra remove 4WD? It would make no sense for Mahindra to remove 4WD from the Thar as it is known for this. Mahindra will have to cut spending from other sectors to maintain the originality of this SUV.
less features
As mentioned above, this may be a bare-bones version. So what can Mahindra get rid of? It could miss the power windows, fog lamps, rear wiper-washer and music system. Mahindra may only offer a soft-top option to keep it affordable. Also, Mahindra could have removed the seats from the second-row and offered it as an additional dealer fitment to save on the initial cost.
Thar Base Model – Pricing and Launch

Mahindra hasn’t confirmed anything about this variant, but the reasons mentioned above make a strong case for its introduction. What about pricing? This new variant could possibly start from around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom), with an on-road price of Rs 12.5 lakh. This will help it compete with the Maruti Jimny, which is expected to be priced aggressively, keeping in mind that it is coming from Maruti’s stable.
