The New York Attorney General’s Office said on Tuesday that its investigation of the Trump Organization has been expanded to a criminal investigation.
“We have notified the Trump Organization that our investigation of the company is no longer a purely civil investigation,” said Fabien Levy, a spokesperson for Attorney General Letitia James, in a statement. “We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization and the Manhattan DA in a criminal capacity.”
Since 2019, James has been investigating allegations that former President Donald Trump and the Trump Organization “improperly” manipulated the value of assets in annual financial statements to obtain loans and obtain tax benefits. The investigation began after Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, testified to Congress.
James’ investigators are working with the Manhattan District Attorney, Cyrus Vance Jr., who conducted a two-year criminal investigation of Trump and his company. Both James and Vance are Democrats.
The Trump Organization did not immediately respond to the Epoch Times’ request for comment, but it denied allegations of misconduct in its previous statement and said it acted in good faith during the investigation.
James has previously stated that she is investigating several Trump Organization properties, including Seven Springs Estate, 40 Wall Street, Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago, and Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles. In addition to Eric Trump, she also tried to seek testimony from a land use lawyer related to the Seven Springs Manor who had worked with the Trump Organization. Eric Trump is the executive vice president of the Trump Organization.
The state attorney general provided some details about the investigation. For example, a special focus was whether the Trump Organization and its agents manipulated the value of Qiquan Manor.
According to the motion and memorandum (pdf) filed in August 2020, she appeared in court in August 2020, complaining that Eric Trump and other associates refused to provide the requested documents and refused to testify under the subpoena, thus delaying and obstructing survey. Court.
The New York State Attorney General confirmed that Eric Trump gave testimony under oath with New York State investigators via video last October. No details about the duration of the interview or the route of the questions were disclosed.
Earlier this year, a New York judge ordered the Trump Organization to provide documents to the attorney general he was trying to detain.
Trump had previously condemned Vance and other Democrats’ efforts to investigate him, saying they had political motives as part of a “witch hunt.”
