New York AG takes action to force Trump to testify in financial fraud case

On Tuesday evening, New York Attorney General Letitia James sued former President Donald Trump and his two children, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump, to force them to testify as part of a civil investigation into the financial dealings of the Trump Organization.

James filed a motion for compulsion in the New York State Supreme Court, seeking an injunction to enforce subpoenas and her office’s demands for documents from Donald Trump Jr.

“For more than two years now, the Trump Organization has been using delaying tactics and litigation in an attempt to interfere with legitimate investigations into its financial transactions,” James said in a statement. “At this point in our investigation, we have found substantial evidence that Donald J. Trump and the Trump Organization falsely and fraudulently valued several assets and presented those values to financial institutions for economic gain.”

These misstatements, according to James, could be used to obtain loans, insurance coverage or tax deductions for buildings in New York and golf courses in New York and Scotland, among other things.

James’s office has subpoenaed three Trumps in recent weeks as part of a years-long investigation into the Trump Organization, when its office first went public that it had solicited information from Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr. The investigation began in March 2019, shortly thereafter. Trump’s longtime lawyer Michael Cohen testified before Congress that the business mogul inflated some assets to get favorable loan terms and devalued others to pay less taxes.

The Trump family sued the Attorney General’s Office to have the lawsuit dismissed and said in December that the case was a “thinly veiled attempt to publicly slander Trump and his associates.”

However, James said on Tuesday that “no one in this country can choose whether or how the law applies to them.”

“We will not stop in our efforts to continue this investigation and ensure that no one is above the law,” she said.
