New York mayor visits Texas-Mexico border

EL PASO, Texas ( Associated Press) — During a visit to the Texas border city of El Paso, New York Mayor Eric Adams strongly criticized the federal government’s response to the influx of immigrants into the cities. Americans and said that “we need clear coordination. “

Adams said on Sunday that cities where migrants arrive need help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“Our cities are being undermined. And we don’t deserve it. Migrants don’t deserve this. And people who live in the cities don’t deserve it,” Adams said at the end of a weekend trip to El Paso. “We expect our national leaders to address this problem in a realistic way.”

Adams said New York City is overwhelmed. According to Adams, since last spring, the city has received about 40,000 asylum seekers, and last week a record number of refugees arrived in one day, about 840.

“New York can’t take any more. We can’t,” Adams said, adding that other cities can’t take any more. “No city deserves what’s happening.”

Democrats also criticized some governors’ practice of driving migrants directly from the border to cities such as New York. For the past year, Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has sent busloads of immigrants to Democratic-run cities over what he sees as inaction from President Joe Biden’s administration to let large numbers of immigrants cross over. boundary.

Adams noted that the governor of Colorado, a Democrat, had also transported immigrants to New York. He said the actions of those two governors “showed bipartisan disrespect for cities and that was wrong.”

Adams said the federal government should cover the costs that cities bear to help.

“We need a real FEMA leadership moment,” he said. “This is a national crisis.”

Biden also visited El Paso earlier this month.
