BRIGHTON, England (NWN) – Isaac Hayden’s equalizer drew Newcastle to a 1-1 draw at Brighton in the face of potential new manager Eddie Howe in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Brighton took the lead from the penalty spot in the 24th minute through Leandro Trossard when he was fouled by Ciaran Clarke.
Against the running of the game, Newcastle hit a leveler in the 65th minute when the ball hit Hayden, who hit the back of the net.
Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was sent off in second-half stoppage time to stop Callum Wilson, with defender Lewis Dunk briefly taking off the glove.
But sixth-placed Brighton held off against the next-to-last side in the standings.
Howe sat next to Newcastle director Amanda Staveley, who worked with the Saudi Sovereign Wealth Fund to buy the Northeast English club last month.
After Unai Emery declines a job to stay at Villarreal, Howe is set to succeed Steve Bruce, who was fired by the new owners.
Howe has been out of management since leaving Bournemouth in 2020, after guiding the team to the top division for the first time and staying there for five years.
