LUSAIL, Qatar ( Associated Press) — Injured Brazil star Neymar went to Lusail Stadium on Friday to cheer the five-time champions’ 1-0 loss to Cameroon at the World Cup in Qatar.
Neymar accompanied his teammates to a match for the first time since injuring his right ankle in Brazil’s debut match against Serbia last week.
When Neymar got off the bus carrying the team, he was not limping and looked in a very good mood. While he was warming up, he chatted with his teammates and even started playing with the ball on the side of the court.
Brazil finished first in Group G and will next face South Korea in the last 16 on Monday.
“With 72 hours left before the game, we have time. (Neymar) hasn’t practiced football yet, it could be tomorrow and it will be important to see how he reacts, depending on how he reacts, we will decide,” said national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar.
Neymar was the only player who stayed at the hotel for the match against Switzerland last Monday. He stayed there to continue his treatment to repair the damaged ligaments in his leg.
Right-back Danilo and left-back Alex Sandro, who will also miss Cameroon due to injuries, will join the rest of the squad in Lusail.
The Brazilian Football Confederation showed Neymar training with the ball at the team hotel. On Wednesday, he underwent physiotherapy in the pool.
Danilo and Alex Sandro worked separately on Friday at the team’s facilities.
Brazil, which already has its ticket to the round of 16, needs to secure first place in Group G against Cameroon which will pit it against South Korea.
Brazilian doctors have not yet said when Neymar will return. The team said the Paris Saint-Germain player would be assessed on Saturday.
Neymar suffered a back injury in a match against Colombia in the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and was unable to play for the rest of the tournament. Furthermore, he was absent from the 2019 Copa America due to another ankle injury.
