NFL suspends Gregory from Broncos and Abushi from Rams

NEW YORK ( Associated Press) – Broncos linebacker Randy Gregory and Rams offensive lineman Ode Abushi were suspended one game each for Los Angeles’ 51-14 win over Denver on Sunday.

NFL Vice President of Operations John Runyan announced the suspensions on Monday for unsportsmanlike conduct and unnecessarily harsh rule violations, specifically those that result in “wrist, arm, elbow, or blow to an opponent’s head, neck, or face.” Prohibits “striking with the hand”.

Gregory will miss the Broncos’ game against Kansas City on Sunday and Abushi will miss the game against the Chargers.

In a letter to the players, Runyan wrote: “While walking towards a group of teammates, coaches and media they both stopped and began hitting each other on the head and neck. His aggressive conduct could have resulted in serious injury and clearly does not reflect the standards of sportsmanship we expect from a professional.”

Gregory, who threw the first punch, declined to comment on what happened after the game, saying only, “You want to know if I hit him in the head? I did”.

Gregory also lost his cool in the game, throwing his helmet on the ground after the Broncos’ three touchdowns in the second quarter and then hitting quarterback Baker Mayfield over the head in the fourth quarter.

Gregory and Abushi exchanged words during the post-match greetings and Gregory punched the helmet of Abushi, who responded before being separated.

Coach Sean McVay said the Rams will appeal the suspension of Abushi, who has started four games and played two close games since signing with Los Angeles in September.

Gregory has been suspended multiple times, including 14 games in 2016 for violating the league’s substance abuse policies, and all of 2017 and 2019 for other violations. He was suspended for two matches in 2018 and six in 2020.
