A military exercise ended in tragedy after two Army Black Hawk helicopter crashes in Kentucky left nine dead.

Army officials, Fort Campbell spokeswoman Nondice Thurman, said the aircraft were conducting a training mission on Wednesday across southwestern Kentucky.

Fort Campbell is located near the Tennessee border, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) north of Nashville, and falls in the community of Gaditan in Trigg County, Kentucky.

Lieutenant General of the CI Airborne, Gen. John Lubas said that although two Black Hawk helicopters crashed in a field near a residential area, there were no injuries on the ground. The nine dead were all in the aircraft, four in one helicopter, and five in the other.

For his part, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said his administration would do everything to assist in the investigation and support the families of the nine deceased.

“We’re going to do what we always do. We want to embrace these families and be there with them, not just in the days, but in the weeks, months and years to come.”
